Why Solar Quotes Vary So Much in Australia
The same 6.6 kW system can be quoted anywhere from $4,000 to $9,000. The spread isn't random - six specific factors drive most of the variation. Understanding them helps you spot a bargain and avoid a dud.
The six factors that drive price variation
When homeowners compare solar quotes and find a $3,000 gap between the cheapest and most expensive, the instinct is to assume the cheap one is a scam or the expensive one is overpriced. Usually, neither is true. The gap is almost always explained by one or more of these six factors.
1. System size
This is the biggest single driver and the most common source of apples-to-oranges comparisons. A 6.6 kW system will always cost less than a 10 kW system. Before comparing prices, confirm that every quote you’re comparing specifies the same total panel capacity.
2. Panel brand tier
Panel quality (and price) varies significantly across three broad tiers:

3. Inverter brand
Fronius, SMA, Enphase, and SolarEdge sit at the premium end. Sungrow and Huawei offer solid quality at mid-range pricing. Budget quotes often feature less-known brands with limited Australian service networks. Since inverters fail more frequently than panels, this is not an area to under-invest in.
4. Roof complexity
A single-pitch north-facing roof on a single-storey home is the easiest install. Multi-pitch roofs, two-storey homes, tile roofs (vs Colorbond), significant shading, and complex wiring runs all add time and cost. Installers price for complexity - so two quotes on the same system size can differ significantly if one installer has visited the site and one hasn’t.
5. Installer margin
This is the hardest factor to see from a quote, but it’s real. Established installers with high demand charge more than newer ones building market share. Some installers run lean operations with their own employees; others use subcontractors whose pricing varies. After controlling for system size and component quality, the remaining variation is largely installer margin.
6. Location
Capital city installs are generally cheaper than regional ones due to lower travel time. Your STC zone also affects the rebate size - Zone 1 (Darwin) attracts more STCs than Zone 4 (Hobart), which means the net cost after rebate differs by location even for the same gross price.
What this means for comparing quotes
Don’t compare prices without first aligning system size, panel brand, and inverter brand. A $4,500 quote for a 6.6 kW system with unknown panels is not cheaper than a $6,500 quote for the same size with Tier-1 panels and a Fronius inverter - it’s a different product.
